About Handy Hook

This Handy Hook endeavor of ours started in the winter of 2018 when I came up with a barbaric version of what we use today. It has come a long way since. We designed and 3D printed hundreds of prototypes that went through R&D on my very own Fire Department. Settled on a version that we are proud of and obtained the patent.

We make sure that all aspects of The Handy Hook are proudly made right here in the Heart of America. I hope that everyone enjoys the Handy Hook as much as I do.

The Handy Hook Story

My name is Nathan Helten, I am the owner/operator/inventor of Handy Hook. I started this glove placement solution process in the winter of 2018. My wife and I had 3 kids on the ground at the time. Our son Charlie was born in December 2018, we were starting the process to begin building our first home for the coming spring/summer 2019, and were extremely busy with life and the house.

Prototyping . . .

I began by building janky prototypes out of steel, springs and bolts. Those led to 3D printing 100’s of models before I came up with a design that my department and I tested for months prior to starting the injection mold design process.

Launching . . .

I initiated the patent process in the winter of 2021. I finished my injection mold and started manufacturing Handy Hook in Wichita, KS in the winter of 2023. After getting professional photos and a promo video finalized in the spring of 2023, we opened up shop May 28, 2023.

Redeveloping . . .

Handy Hook then underwent a serious gut check when I realized that my mounting process was much less than reliable. I immediately started the redesign process and came out with my first solution in September 2023. That back plate mounting design worked well but also had limitations and would fail.

I was already in the mood to redesign and come up with something that would hold your Hook onto your bunker gear tight enough that your bunker gear would have to fail before my mounting design would. I came up with what I call the Dog Ear Backplate that will hold your Handy Hooks so well to your gear that you would either have to break the plastic, which isn’t easy, or your bunker gear would have to fail.

Redeveloping . . . again

Patented and Proudly American . . .

Handy Hook received our patent in Spring of 2025, after 4 long years of waiting. See Patent Information.

Handy Hook is proud to be an American businesses, manufactured in my home state of Kansas. We ship all around the United States, North America, and beyond. Our international reach is growing by the year, but our products stay Made in America.

I am very proud of how reliable my product is now and am happy to work with any customers who purchased my initial failed design and want to upgrade to the final version. Thank you for your interest in Handy Hook and be on the lookout for more information, promotions, and new products coming out very soon!
